Port of Blyth has revealed (see External Link below) exciting plans for how the River Blyth’s upper estuary could look following the planned redevelopment programmes currently under way at its Bates and Battleship Wharf terminals, as well as at the neighbouring Northumberland Energy Park.
Bates Terminal has recently been created by the joining together of two existing terminals – Wimbourne Quay and the original Bates site. By merging the two terminals, the Port has created a highly flexible eighteen hectare facility with two heavy lift quays, 16,500sqm of existing warehousing, a marine fuels terminal and up to 10ha of prime, quayside located development land.
Battleship Wharf is a 17ha multi-use terminal with excellent road and rail connections, a range of both covered and open storage available and 480 metres of heavy duty quays. The Port has recently been granted a decommissioning licence for a designated 2.3ha decom site within the terminal to handle up to 50,000 tonnes of offshore energy materials per year. The focus will be on small to medium sized projects and pieces up to 4000 tonnes in response to demand.
Northumberland Energy Park is a hugely exciting 200ha land development project being delivered by Northumberland County Council in partnership with the Port. A Government investment of £25m will shortly see a new heavy lift quay installed and associated land remediation carried out in preparation for the creation of major quayside manufacturing and engineering opportunities.
