The PMSC is the national standard for every aspect of port marine safety. A central requirement of the Code is that risk management processes are used to inform the implementation of a marine safety management system (MSMS). The Code recommends the appointment of a DP to provide independent assurance directly to the Duty Holder that the MSMS is working effectively and is compliant with the Code.

Littlehampton Harbour is a Trust Port and the Statutory Authority for the harbour approaches and River Arun as far as Old Town Bridge in Arundel. The harbour is a busy yacht and recreational port, with an active commercial and sports fishing fleet. The harbour is also used by larger sea going shipping for the import of bulk material.

Monty Smedley, Head of Maritime at ABPmer, said “We are delighted to be appointed to provide DP services for Littlehampton Harbour. The core of this service checks that the MSMS is being effectively applied. This will take the form a compliance audit of the harbours marine risk assessments, policies, plans and procedures.”

Harry Gregory, Harbour Master at Littlehampton said “The harbour team look forward to working with Monty and ABPmer’s other marine advisors. The harbour prides itself on being a thriving and, above all, safe haven for leisure sailors and commercial mariners alike. We welcome external checks carried out by an independent Designated Person in helping us achieve that goal.”

ABPmer has a wealth of experience providing PMSC support to port and harbour operators of all sizes. Their maritime specialists are routinely appointed as the independent Designated Person (DP). Their DPs facilitate hazard identification workshops, advise on marine risk management and undertake safety management system compliance audits.
