Assistant Harbourmaster / Trainee Pilot

 

 

 

 

SCRABSTER HARBOUR TRUST  is seeking an experienced maritime professional to support safe, efficient and compliant marine operations.

This role offers a structured development pathway toward Harbour Pilot authorisation

About Scrabster harbour

Scrabster handles ferry, fishing, cruise, commercial cargo, offshore and marine services traffic. This role supports long-term succession planning for marine leadership within the Trust.

 

The Role

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

•  Safe vessel traffic management & berth planning

•  Mooring, pilotage & marine service operations

•  Marine risk assessments & emergency planning

•  Incident response & marine accident reporting

•  Supporting the Marine Safety Management System

•  Compliance with the Port Marine Safety Code

•  Liaison with shipmasters, pilots, agents, fishing vessel operators, ferry & cruise representatives, contractors and regulators

•  Supervision & crewing of harbour workboats

•  Deputising for senior marine staff when trained

 

Trainee Pilot Development

A structured training route toward Harbour Pilot authorisation, including:

  • Local knowledge of the harbour, approaches, berths, navigational constraints, traffic patterns & environmental conditions
  • Simulator, onboard, classroom & practical training
  • Maintained training records & progressive assessment
  • Authorisation subject to demonstrated competence

 

About You

Essential:

•  Significant practical maritime experience

•  Sound seamanship & safety awareness

•  Risk management capability

•  Strong communication skills

•  Flexibility for shift/out-of-hours work

•  Commitment to structured training

Desirable:

•  STCW Certificate of Competency

•  Harbour authority / port operations experience

•  Knowledge of the Port Marine Safety Code

•  Marine safety management & risk assessment

•  VHF / marine communications experience

•  Workboat, mooring or small craft experience

 

Salary:      Competitive, dependent on experience + shift allowance

Hours:      Full time, occasional shift work
