SMS Manager - Port of London Authority

Starting salary: £42,534 per annum (Grade 5)

The Port of London Authority (PLA) is the statutory harbour authority for the tidal Thames from the outer estuary to Teddington. As part of our duties under the Port Marine Safety Code, we manage and maintain the portís navigational safety management system.

Reporting to the Harbour Master (SMS & VTS), this post supports the Chief Harbour Masterís team in fulfilling their responsibilities to provide a safe and efficient port.

You will manage, on a day to day basis, the development and maintenance of an effective navigational SMS that meets the requirements of the PMSC as well as providing trend analysis and advice to the harbour masterís team to promote changes and improvements to the SMS.

To ensure the SMS remains compliant with the requirements of the PMSC, you will also plan, co-ordinate and undertake a program of internal audits and manage and consult on changes to the PLAís regulatory framework to ensure it remains fit for purpose.

Applicants should ideally hold a STCW II/2 (Masters Unlimited) Certificate of Competency or equivalent or a lesser STCW / BML Certificate, and have at least 2 years relevant management experience in the marine and ports industry, including in particular, navigational safety management and risk assessment.

You must be able to lead, motivate and manage effectively and have proven and effective interpersonal skills. Good writing skills and an ability to work effectively under pressure are essential. In return we offer a competitive salary, generous leave and a contributory pension scheme.
